Polish citizenship
Polish citizenship can be acquired by law, by granting, by recognition or by restoration. We explain which path is for you.
Polish citizenship is acquired by law, by granting, by recognition as a Polish citizen or by restoration (Art. 4 of the Act on Polish Citizenship). For a foreigner living in Poland, two paths are the most common:
- recognition as a Polish citizen - a decision of the voivode when you meet the conditions of the Act,
- granting by the President of Poland - without statutory conditions, at the President's discretion.
If your parents or grandparents were Polish citizens, you may already have citizenship - see confirmation of citizenship.
A Polish citizen may also have the citizenship of another country, but cannot rely on it before Polish authorities (Art. 3). Whether your country allows you to keep its citizenship, check in its own rules.
